Armelle Caron: Paris bien rangé

French artist Armelle Caron uses maps in a couple of ways. First, have a look at her organized city maps, executed between 2005 and 2008, in which city blocks are taken apart and organized into neat rows. She does something similar with a world map in Le monde rangé, available as a poster. See also her 2010 series, Les villes en creux, where city blocks are cut out of the paper. Nice effect.

Holiday Trees throughout Google Earth

Now that Google has introduced 3D trees to Google Earth 6, they’ve decided to take it a step further and drop decorated trees in various places around the globe.

According to their blog, these special trees can be found in 14 different locations. However, they’ve only revealed 11 of them. Here are the 11 that they’ve shown:

• Boston Common, Boston, MA
• Skyline Park, Denver, CO
• Grove Plaza, Boise, ID
• Alster Fountain, Hamburg, Germany
• North Capital of Texas Highway, Austin, TX
• Place Du Parvis Notre-Dame, Paris, France
• Old Town Square, Prague, Czech Republic
• Red Square, Moscow, Russia
• Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY
• Pier 39, San Francisco, CA
• Trafalgar Square, London, England

I tracked down those 11 trees and loaded them into this KMZ file for you. Now, who can find the other three?

Below is the video that shows off the first 11. Leave a comment if you’re able to find any of the others.

Street View in Romania

Bram Stoker’s world famous novel Dracula was believed to have been inspired by fifteenth century Wallachian Prince, Vlad Dracul from Romania (better known to many as Vlad the Impaler). The legend of the vampire is still deeply rooted in Transylvanian culture today, and tourists from across the world come to explore the history and mystery of the many beautiful castles that can be found here.
But of course those aren’t all the sights Romania has to offer, and now you can see for yourself, because today we’re making 360-degree Street View imagery available in Romania for several cities and roads.
From your virtual vantage point, you can now take a look over the bridge onto Lacul Vidraru (Vidraru Lake). This is the starting point of the most beautiful road in Romania, the Transfăgărășan mountain pass, which at its highest point reaches 2,034 meters above sea level:
Or check out the summer residence of Romanian Kings, Castelul Peleș (Peleș Castle):
It’s not just Paris that has an Arc de Triomphe. You can whizz round the Romanian
Arcul de Triumf in the capital Bucharest:
And here’s our parliamentary palace, Palatul Parlamentului (Parliament Palace):
There’s heaps to explore but I’ll leave you with one final tip, and that’s to visit
Vatra Ardealului, my favorite cofee shop in Brasov, which you can see below:
Welcome to Romania and enjoy your virtual exploration!
